The teacher contributors for this chapter described several reasons for testing and evaluation: Why test? A rationale for evaluating learning and instruction Describe issues related to state- or district wide proficiency testing and students with disabilities.Recognize issues related to grading in inclusive settings.Identify accommodations and modifications useful in testing situations.Identify ways to measure student progress and learning.Describe ways to integrate instruction and assessment.Recognize issues of fairness in evaluation.Begin to formulate your rationale for evaluating learning and instruction in your classroom. We also discuss issues related to grading students with disabilities and their participation in state- and district wide assessments. In addition to answering the question, “Why test?” we describe authentic ways to evaluate your students’ progress and, thus, the effectiveness of your instruction. In this chapter, we explore issues related to assessing learning and evaluating progress in inclusive high schools.
